The PURPOSE of United Methodist Women

The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know GOD and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ, to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

Out of the Purpose are four mission foci that relate to the the mission initiatives and priorities of United Methodist Women.

  • To expand concepts of mission


Meetings are held the third Wednesday mornings at 9:30 am September – May. Membership is for all women who indicate their desire to belong and participate in the mission of the church locally, nationally & worldwide are welcome.

March Happenings

For March: Hosted the Red Cross Blood Drive March 3rd, Served a noon meal for retired Teacher’s Assoc. on Mar.2 and the annual Rummage Sale will be held Thursday-Saturday, April 7,8 & 9.

April Happenings
The UMW had their April Rummage Sale on the 7th-10th. The total proceeds came to $2,010.25 which included $310.20 from the Bake Sale. A special thank you is extended to the following crew who helped set up and take down: Larry Baggett, Jim Leyda, Jim Ackerson, Paul Gaylord, Mark Johnson, Paul Townsend, Glen Fugate, Don Hardin and Mike Krebill and some of the members of Boy Scout Troop #43.
Registration for this years Mission U (formerly SOCM or School of Christian Missions) are now available. Deadline for the July (summer) U is June 17th and September 21st for the fall U. The forms will be pinned to the UMW board.
May Happenings
With the ending of the 2015-16 school year, it has also ended the weekly Wednesday afternoon KEOKids program at St. Paul UCC. Thank you to all who helped Trinity UMW monthly & ecumenically support the program in giving your time, monies, and snack food items throughout the year.
Also ending is the Literacy Project at Hawthorne Elementary School. Thank you for weekly volunteering your time to help children who needed the extra special help with the education development.
Thank You to Shirley Townsend and Shelby Gullick for hosting the Keokuk Garden Club’s area annual meeting/luncheon at Trinity this year. 
For those of you who have participated in the Reading Program for the year, please fill out your report sheets and return it to Helen Ackerson before her due date of June 30th
June Happenings

One Wednesday June 15th Keokuk Trinity UMW will celebrate UMW’s mission movement and extended communities by hosting an area-wide salad luncheon with program by Elaine Foley. in our fellowship hall from 11:15 am – 1:45 pm.  Registration will start at 11:15 am with lunch at 12:00  and program following.. Registration is due by June 6th. Call Sally Tedrow (795-2005) or Carol Nelson (524-3125) to say your coming. Come and meet, fellowship , with your United Methodist Sisters.   

Later that afternoon at 2:30 pm, UMW will help staff at River Hills celebrate residents birthdays in June with Bingo and Treats.  Contact Joyce Jackson or Carol Nelson if you would like to help.

June 18th is the deadline to send in your registration for the July 17-20 mission education retreat (summer session) called Mission U in Marshalltown. Registration forms are on board in Narthex. Financial help is available.

“Thank you” to every one who planned, cooked and worked (set up, take down cleaned and put away) to make our June 15th first Area-wide UMW Luncheon such a pleasant and delicious event for every one involved. It was great to see so many: 50 members strong. Thank you both, Shelby and Bill G. for sharing your beautiful rose and Judy W. for sharing your colorful pitchers as vases for the roses and cloth squares as centerpieces. Also, thank you Larry, for setting up the room for the day.

July Happenings

Members of Trinity UMW, we have been invited “to, as Pastor Barb Hargerla of the Clark Co. Mo. UMW said “dare to cross that Des Monies River and  MO/IA boarder” in friend – and fellowship” UMW Luncheon. It will be on Wed. July 27th with registration starting at 9:45 am. Reservation deadline is Saturday, July 16th. If your calendar is free for the 27th, please consider joining in on the fun and notify Sally Tedrow or myself by Monday, July 11. At present, suggested departure time will be 9:00 am.   Carol Nelson, UMW President

August Happenings
Members of the Nominating Committee have completed working on the slate of officers for 2017.  This slate will be voted upon during the Sept. 21st unit meeting.  “Thank You” to all members who said “Yes” when called.  New officers, workers and members are always welcome and needed.


Sept. Meeting

The Executive Board resumes on Sept. 12th – 11:00 a.m. Our general unit meeting is on the 1st (9:30 a.m.) when Helen Ackerson will talk about and share some of the books on the 2017 Reading Program.

October Happenings

The October UMW Unit meeting will be on Wednesday, Oct. 19th at 9:30 am in the Fellowship hall. Helen Ackerson will present the program on the new Reading Program books for 2017.

We will also discuss the kits for the Ingathering and ask for volunteers to help take them Sat., Nov. 5th to Mt. Pleasant, IA. Wesleyan Campus as well as decide departure time and activities found at the Ingathering. The completed Kits (or items of the kits put into sealed baggies) will need to be put into the “Ingathering boxes” in the conference room by Sun., Oct. 30th at the latest to allow for the necessary book work, etc. to be done prior to transporting them on Nov. 5th.

UMW fall Mission U Event will be Oct. 21-23 with deadline being Sept. 21. Scholarships are available for first time attendees and other financial help are available for those interested in going. Lunch and supper are included in the registration fee.  Contact Carol for forms. The present studies are for (July 2016-2017) as follows: The Bible and Human Sexuality:Claiming God”s Good Gift, Climate Justice – A Call to Hope and Action, and Latin America: People and Faith. 

Iowa UMW Conference meeting will be held this Oct. 8 from 9-4 pm in Decorah. The keynote speaker is Bishop Haller who has just been newly appointed to the the district, the meeting includes coffee, food, fellowship, singing, business, information, breakouts of varying interests, mission information and worship. Lunch will cost $7.00 Decorh is about 220 mi. north, a 4:30 am departure is being considered.  Deadline for registering for the meeting with the $7.00 is by Sept.30th. Let Carol know by Sept. 20th.
